Where to Go Camping Near NYC This Summer: The Best Spots for Warm-Weather Adventures
Summer is the season for adventure, and camping near NYC is the perfect way to escape the heat while immersing yourself in nature. Whether you’re looking for a beachside retreat, a rock-climbing challenge, or the perfect group camping getaway, these top spots offer something for every summer camper.
1. Hither Hills State Park – Beach Camping
📍 Location: Montauk, NY
🚆 How to Get There: You don’t need a car for this one! Take the Long Island Rail Road to Montauk, then use Hampton Hopper’s free Montauk shuttle, Suffolk Transit On-Demand, a local taxi, or bike to reach the park if you’re packing light.
Nothing says summer like waking up to ocean waves. Hither Hills offers oceanfront campsites, a sandy ocean beach, swimming, surf fishing, scenic dunes, picnic areas, and a campground right by the Atlantic. It’s also one of those campgrounds where waking up early is actually worth it — the sunrise over the ocean can be absolutely gorgeous.
No car? You can still make Hither Hills work with a little extra planning. The LIRR goes to Montauk, and from there you can use local last-mile options like Suffolk Transit On-Demand, a taxi, rideshare, or seasonal shuttle service. Hampton Hopper also operates a free Montauk shuttle, and Suffolk Transit On-Demand serves the Montauk/East Hampton area daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Just check current routes, hours, and pickup options before you go, especially if you’re carrying camping gear.
And if you do have a car, Hither Hills can easily become a full Hamptons/Montauk weekend. Stop at Wölffer Estate Vineyard for a cool tasting room break, then head back east for beach time, lighthouse photos, and a stroll along the cliffs.
Good to know: Hither Hills is extremely popular and books quickly. Plan far ahead, pack for sun and wind, and double-check swimming hours, shuttle details, and campground rules before your trip.
2. Minnewaska State Park – Rock Climbing & Waterfalls
📍 Location: Shawangunk Ridge, NY
🚗 How to Get There: Best accessed by car; bus options available to New Paltz with a taxi to the park.
If you love rock climbing, swimming holes, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks Minnewaska is a must-visit. Camp nearby at Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground, located just minutes from world-class climbing routes. Hike to Sam’s point and check out the ice caves, for a nice mid weekend cool down.
3. Taconic State Park – Swimming & Hiking
📍 Location: Columbia County, NY
🚆 How to Get There: Metro-North to Wassaic, then taxi or car rental.
Taconic State Park is home to Bash Bish Falls, New York’s highest waterfall, and offers fantastic swimming, hiking, and fishing. Camp at Copake Falls Campground for easy access to trails and campground swimming lakes.
4. Kittatinny Campground – River Camping & Water Sports
📍 Location: Delaware River, PA/NJ border
🚗 How to Get There: Best accessed by car; some bus options available.
For kayaking, tubing, and canoeing, Kittatinny Campground is the water lover’s perfect summer getaway. Rent a tube and float down the Delaware River by day, then relax by the campfire at night.
