Why Fall is the Best Time to Go Camping (2025 Guide for NYC & Beyond)
As summer winds down and the crispness of fall sets in, many people assume camping season is over. But ask any seasoned camper, and they’ll tell you fall is actually the best time to pitch a tent. With vibrant foliage, cool nights, and cozy campfire vibes, fall camping in the Northeast — whether in New York, Pennsylvania, or New England — offers an unforgettable experience.
1. Fall Foliage: Nature’s Greatest Show
One of the biggest draws of fall camping is the foliage. Forests burst into fiery shades of red, orange, and gold, making every hike or scenic drive a wonderland.
Catskills & Hudson Valley: late September through mid-October
Delaware River Valley: early–mid October
New England: late September–late October, depending on elevation
Whether you’re trekking through the Catskills, chasing waterfalls at Bash Bish Falls, or cruising Route 28, the views are unbeatable.
2. Crisp, Clear Nights for Stargazing
Fall nights are cooler and clearer, creating perfect conditions for stargazing. Without summer haze, the skies sparkle with constellations and shooting stars. We personally love Cherry Springs Dark Skies Park in Pennsylvania and Kejimkujik National Park in Nova Scotia, Canada. Both are designated as dark skies parks. We’ve also seen some gorgeous celestial displays in Acadia National Park in Maine and Tupper Lake in the Adirondacks.
For dark skies closer to NYC, head to the Catskills or Delaware River Valley.
Pro tip: Hipcamp sites often offer better stargazing than public campgrounds, thanks to fewer lights and quieter locations.
3. Campfires Are Even Cozier
Summer fires can feel too hot. In fall, a campfire is pure magic — the warmth, the crackle, the smoky scent in the cool air. Picture yourself wrapped in a blanket, sipping hot cider or whiskey, swapping stories under the stars.
4. Comfort Food Hits the Spot
Cooler temps make hearty meals taste even better. Think campfire chili, bbq ribs, or a hearty mac and cheese that keeps you warm all night. For dessert? Try campfire apple pie or roasted marshmallows with cider.

5. Fewer Crowds, More Adventure
Hiking trails and campgrounds are far less crowded once summer ends. Cooler weather makes it easier to go the extra mile on hikes — like the waterfall trek at Bash Bish Falls, right on the NY/MA border, which also has nearby cabins and tent camping options.
6. The Perfect Time for Outdoor Events
Fall camping is also about community. If you’d rather not plan the details yourself, join us for one of our Catskills campouts:
Mountain Cruisin’ (Sept 12–14, 2025) → A motorcycle-inspired weekend with scenic rides, fall flavors, and campfire hangs.
Autumn Glow (Oct 3–5, 2025) → Our signature fall foliage event with cozy nights, hearty food, and unforgettable community vibes.
Why Wait for Summer? Fall is Calling
Fall offers the best of both worlds: stunning foliage, crisp nights, cozy fires, and hearty food. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a first-timer, it’s the perfect season to get outdoors.
